Joseph Leo Welter Jr., 85 years old of Knox, Indiana, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2020 at his home in Washington Township.

Joe was born Thursday, July 19, 1934 in Knox, Indiana, Son of the late Joseph Welter and the late Lou Ellen (Atichson) Welter. Joe lived his entire life in Starke County. He attended Ober Elementary school and Knox High School. He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1995.

Joe is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet (McFarland) Welter of Knox, Indiana, Step-daughter, Kathleen Anne Gates of San Diego, California, Brother, James(Helen) Welter of Indianapolis, Indiana, Brother, Harold(Becky) Welter of Knox, Indiana, Sister, Dorothy Holmes of Winneconne, Wisconsin, Sister, Marcella Griffin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by step-son Ken Goble Jr., great-grandson Johnathon Gates, brother Paul Welter and sisters Jeanette Welter, Frances Avila, and half sisters Eva Kauss, Margaret McCoy, Josephine Stuemer, Christine Mitchell and half brothers Frank and Ray Welter.

Joe served on active duty in the US Army and was stationed in Korea for 16 months shortly after the Korean War ended. He was an active life-time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, where he ushered and served Mass. He was a Charter Member of the Queen of All Saints Council of the Knights of Columbus, and also a life long member of the Kights of Columbus  and served on the Washington Township Advisory Board for many years, acting as the administrator of Eagle Creek cemetery. Joe was a member of the Historical Society and the Starke County Genealogy Society and the Knox American Legion. Joe enjoyed traveling, especially his trip to London and Israel.

Despite the hardship of growing up, Joe loved life on the farm and would hustle a job on any work crew in walking distance to earn money as a teenager. Family and friends were an important part of Joe's life and regaled all who would listen with his many stories

Friends will be received 10 AM until time of service at 12 PM, Monday, June 8, 2020 at the Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Knox, Indiana.

Services will be held at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Monday, June 8, 2020 at 12 PM with Father Stephen Loncar officiating.

Interment will follow in the Round Lake Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, due to allergies, memorials contributions may be made to Washington Township Fire Department.
